Recoverable flushing things down the toilet?

if you flush things down the toilet, are they gone for good and no longer recoverable? What if I were to flush a folder down the toilet? would it still be recoverable? say i flush a book down the toilet, will it still be readable and will someone likely be able to find and recover it?
