How do i convert MPG files to be readable for quickplay?

im doing a school project, and i filmed a movie using a handheld recorder. My friend took it home, edited to the movies, and put them onto a memory stick for me. But, now when i try to watch the movies, a get an error message saying that the format of the movie is not readable by quickplay. How can i fix this?
